Editorial Illustration brief - 2 part.

This brief is going to be done for a number of different reasons and will have a number of different deliverables based on that. This idea started off as two ideas which i have combined into one brief. I have done this because together the briefs were not too large a brief, and one was a collaboration. As I said in my last post about the D&AD brief, I want to make any collaborative work I do, a bi product of the work I produce alone to give the brief much more value overall. Also, that way it means i will always have a body of work whatever happens in regard to the collaboration.

The first set of ideas is as follows:

Haiku illustrations for book fair, march 2011. (Part 1)

Illustrate for 10 Haikus - to be put into a poetry book and sold at the Leeds Book Fair in March 2011.
Idea comes from Popshot magazine, in which a poem and an illustration exist in harmony on a double page spread.
Visual uniformity in imagery, reflect mood of poem in illustration. (concept driven illustration)
A run of screen prints, postcards and greetings cards could stem from the illustrations which will also be in the book.
Book could be professionally printed, is much more time and cost effective to do it like this, especially if we are creating a run of say 50 to sell at the book fair.
The book itself is a collaboration, but the range can come from me, and is a good opportunity to explore specialist print processes, colour, and illustration as a technical discipline. (line weight, composition etc.)

Tone of Voice:

  • Collectors piece
  • Entertain
Audience:
  • Collectors
  • publishers
  • poetry lovers
  • pop shot magazine readers

Editorial Illustration for a magazine / publication of choice (Part 2)

Pick 10 / 20 Articles from a publication (e.g The Guardian) Produce illustrations based on the article
House this in a supplementary document for the publication of choice (e.g, the news in february, can then propose all other months of the year - alternatively do one illustration for every month of the year, picking the most relevant story, current affairs or the news of 2010/ 2011)
Concept driven illustration
Promotional monthly supplement for chosen publication, billboard ads, London tube station, buses could all be promotional devices used for this brief.

Tone of Voice:

  • Inform, news
  • Based on articles (will pick a theme for all the articles to sit in for uniformity)
Audience:
  • Readers of that publication - possibly the younger bracket of that demographic.

Both these briefs form a line of inquiry into editorial illustration in context, but the context for the two briefs is different (part 1 is focused on the creative publishing context while part 2 focuses on the commercial editorial side) exploring the subject area of editorial illustration from these two angles will a: make my portfolio more versatile, hopefully making me more employable as an illustrator and B: form a basis for two sets of comprehensive research focused in the same area but with differing emphasis on context.
